Valley back down to earth

Bouyed up by their win the previous week, Valley travelled to Merton. We were aware of their, so far, excellent record but were hopeful that we could give them a run for their money. We started well enough creating a few chances including a penalty corner.

It was Merton who opened the scoring though with a penalty stroke. This seemed to put Valley on the back foot and they were soon under increasing pressure. Merton's skilful forwards and midfield created several opportunities and they converted 2 of them and forced lots of fine saves from Vicky Carter in goal.

With the score 3-0 at half time Valleys realistic plan for the second half was damage limitation.

However, Merton had taken their foot off and Valley started to edge back into it. After a fine strike from Emily Peters they enjoyed a small period of pressure and seemed briefly as if they might score another to make it interesting.

It wasn't to be though and the final score was 3-1. On the positive side though, we won the 2nd half and the oppo provided very nice teas !!
